What moves Bittensor (TAO)

As of October 12, 2026. This page describes drivers that already have a public record, and dates that are already on a calendar. It is not investment advice. It does not say to buy, sell, or hold, and it does not forecast a price.

What typically drives the price

A 21 million cap, cut when issuance crosses a milestone. TAO is the token of Bittensor. tao.media, on August 1, 2026, describes a cap of 21 million and a first halving in December 2025, when issuance crossed 10.5 million and the block reward went to 0.5 TAO, about 3,600 TAO a day. The OpenTensor Foundation posted on December 16, 2025 that the first halving had occurred, with a block reward of 0.5 TAO and daily emission of about 3,600 TAO. The same tao.media page says the next cut is at 15.75 million TAO, to 0.25 TAO a block, and places that around 2029. It labels dates after the first event as projections. Recycled registration fees can push the milestone later. The height is not the trigger. The issued supply is.

tao.media, on July 23, 2026, says there was no pre-mine, that blocks arrive about every 12 seconds, and that new TAO is the block reward. CoinGecko's markets response on October 12, 2026, 09:56 UTC, reported circulating supply of about 11.34 million against a maximum of 21 million. That reading is above the 10.5 million first milestone and below the 15.75 million next one. It is not a date.

Subnet demand. Bittensor pays miners, validators, and subnet owners in the network's reward flow. A new subnet, or a change in how emissions are split, is the kind of protocol note that has drawn attention. tao.media's July 23, 2026 page describes a split of 41% to miners, 41% to validators and the people who stake with them, and 18% to the subnet owner. That split is a design note, not a calendar entry.

Leverage. Perpetual markets can force liquidations that extend a move. Funding and open interest are not alert types until that feed is connected.

How much it usually moves

From October 13, 2025 through October 12, 2026, CoinGecko's daily USD series for bittensor produced 364 close-to-close changes. The method is in README.md.

The median absolute move was 2.7%. The 90th percentile day was 8.1%. The price moved at least 5% on 97 days, at least 3% on 167 days, and at least 10% on 20 days. The largest close-to-close change in the window was 26.3%.

About 1 day in 4 cleared 5%. A fixed "5% up or down" rule fires on a week that was ordinary for TAO in this window. The next halving is a supply milestone, not a day on this quarter's calendar. An unusual-move alert uses Bittensor's own recent range.

A 5% move inside one hour is a different event from a 5% close-to-close day. This count does not measure the hourly case.

Example alerts

These are examples of wording. They are not recommendations, and they are not live prices. Terminal can run an unusual move, a percent move, a price level, or a volume spike. The note on an alert describes the move. It does not tell you what to do.

  1. Tell me when Bittensor (TAO) moves more than usual within an hour.
  2. Tell me when TAO moves more than usual within 24 hours.
  3. Tell me when TAO's volume is at least 3 times its 20-day average.

An unusual-move alert waits 4 hours before it can fire again, unless you change that. A volume alert waits 1 hour by default.

Scheduled events as of October 12, 2026

No dated public supply event was confirmed for the next quarter in the sources checked on October 12, 2026.

The next halving, at 15.75 million TAO, is a supply milestone. tao.media's August 1, 2026 page places it around 2029 and calls that a projection. The first halving is already in the past.
