What moves Ethereum (ETH)
As of October 11, 2026. This page describes drivers that already have a public record, and dates that are already on a calendar. It is not investment advice. It does not say to buy, sell, or hold, and it does not forecast a price.
What typically drives the price
Issuance and the fee burn. Ethereum has used proof of stake since the Merge on September 15, 2022. New ETH depends on how much is staked. Since EIP-1559, the base fee of each transaction is burned. A busy chain burns more. A quiet chain burns less. Net supply can rise or fall with those two legs. This page does not quote a live net-issuance figure.
Network upgrades. The roadmap on ethereum.org, read in October 2026, lists upgrades that are already in production: Shapella (April 12, 2023), Dencun (March 13, 2024), Pectra (May 7, 2025), and Fusaka (December 3, 2025). Fusaka activated on mainnet at slot 13,164,544 (December 3, 2025, 21:49:11 UTC) and added PeerDAS plus a path for later blob-parameter changes. Each of those upgrades changed fees, staking, or how much data rollups can post. ETH has moved around those dates because the change is public and the timing is known in advance.
US spot ether products. The SEC approved the exchange rule changes for spot ether products on May 23, 2024. The products began trading in July 2024. Creations and redemptions are a daily supply-and-demand print, the same shape as the bitcoin products, on a smaller base. This page does not quote a live flow figure.
Leverage, and the rest of crypto. Ether perpetual futures carry a funding rate, and liquidations can extend a move, as they do for Bitcoin. ETH also moves with BTC on many days and with activity on rollups, because rollup fees and blob demand feed the burn. Funding and open interest are not alert types until that feed is connected.
How much it usually moves
From October 12, 2025 through October 11, 2026, CoinGecko's daily USD series for ethereum produced 364 close-to-close changes. The method is in README.md.
The median absolute move was 1.6%. The 90th percentile day was 5.1%. The price moved at least 5% on 38 days, at least 3% on 92 days, and at least 10% on 6 days. The largest close-to-close change in the window was 17.5%.
A fixed "5% up or down" rule sits almost exactly on the 90th percentile day. About 1 day in 10 cleared it. That is often enough to message you on a large-but-ordinary week, and quiet enough to miss a run of 3% days (92 days in this window) that are already wide for a calm month. The bar never moves. An unusual-move alert does. It uses Ethereum's own recent range, so a quiet month and a wild month do not share one percent.
A 5% move inside one hour is a different event from a 5% close-to-close day. This count does not measure the hourly case.
Example alerts
These are examples of wording. They are not recommendations, and they are not live prices. Terminal can run an unusual move, a percent move, a price level, or a volume spike. The note on an alert describes the move. It does not tell you what to do.
- Tell me when Ethereum (ETH) moves more than usual within an hour.
- Tell me when ETH moves more than usual within 4 hours.
- Tell me when ETH's volume is at least 3 times its 20-day average.
An unusual-move alert waits 4 hours before it can fire again, unless you change that.
Scheduled events as of October 11, 2026
- When: October 6, 2026, 13:53:36 UTC, already passed. What: Glamsterdam on the Sepolia testnet, epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768. What is fixed: Done. This was not mainnet.
- When: Mainnet date not set. What: Glamsterdam on Ethereum mainnet (enshrined proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists). What is fixed: ethereum.org lists the upgrade as in development for Q4 2026. The September 28, 2026 Foundation post says Hoodi and mainnet dates are not decided.
No mainnet slot was published in the sources checked on October 11, 2026. A later client-team post is the record that would set one.
