What moves Aave (AAVE)

As of October 12, 2026. This page describes drivers that already have a public record, and dates that are already on a calendar. It is not investment advice. It does not say to buy, sell, or hold, and it does not forecast a price.

What typically drives the price

A 16 million cap that is mostly already issued. AAVE is the governance token of the Aave lending protocol. CoinGecko's markets response on October 12, 2026, 09:56 UTC, reported circulating supply of about 15.44 million against a maximum of 16 million. A large cliff of unissued tokens was not what that response showed.

Tokens the DAO has acquired. An Aave governance post on February 28, 2026 said that since April 9, 2025 the DAO had spent $42 million acquiring 205,000 AAVE, about 1.28% of the 16 million supply, over about ten months. Those tokens were removed from the market and placed with the DAO. The post does not say they were destroyed. A later destruction date was not found on that page.

Umbrella, and the older safety module. Aave's docs describe Umbrella as the system that covers bad debt by staking receipt tokens and GHO, Aave's own stablecoin. The docs say the cooldown is 20 days and the withdrawal window is 2 days. That is a per-account timer, not a network clock. A governance post on August 28, 2026 described the stkAAVE reward rate as unchanged at 150 AAVE per day, in a proposal to top up the allowance. A September 25, 2026 proposal sets Umbrella reward allowances through December 2, 2026. That date is the end of a reward period in the proposal. It is not a token unlock, and this page did not read a vote result for it.

Borrowing on the protocol. When borrowing in the pools expands or a new asset is listed, the headline is public and AAVE has moved with that class of news. The price move is not the fee the pool collected. This page does not quote a live borrow balance.

Leverage. Perpetual markets can force liquidations that extend a move. Funding and open interest are not alert types until that feed is connected.

How much it usually moves

From October 13, 2025 through October 12, 2026, CoinGecko's daily USD series for aave produced 364 close-to-close changes. The method is in README.md.

The median absolute move was 2.6%. The 90th percentile day was 7.0%. The price moved at least 5% on 68 days, at least 3% on 159 days, and at least 10% on 17 days. The largest close-to-close change in the window was 23.6%.

About 1 day in 5 cleared 5%. A fixed "5% up or down" rule fires several times a month on days that this window treats as ordinary for AAVE. An unusual-move alert separates "wide for this month" from "cleared 5%."

A 5% move inside one hour is a different event from a 5% close-to-close day. This count does not measure the hourly case.

Example alerts

These are examples of wording. They are not recommendations, and they are not live prices. Terminal can run an unusual move, a percent move, a price level, or a volume spike. The note on an alert describes the move. It does not tell you what to do.

  1. Tell me when Aave (AAVE) moves more than usual within an hour.
  2. Tell me when AAVE moves more than usual within 24 hours.
  3. Tell me when AAVE's volume is at least 3 times its 20-day average.

An unusual-move alert waits 4 hours before it can fire again, unless you change that. A volume alert waits 1 hour by default.

Scheduled events as of October 12, 2026

No dated public supply unlock was confirmed for the next quarter in the sources checked on October 12, 2026. The 20-day Umbrella cooldown is a per-account timer.
