What moves Zcash (ZEC)

As of October 11, 2026. This page describes drivers that already have a public record, and dates that are already on a calendar. It is not investment advice. It does not say to buy, sell, or hold, and it does not forecast a price.

What typically drives the price

The block subsidy, and the next halving. Zcash caps issuance at 21 million ZEC. After the Blossom upgrade, halvings are 1,680,000 blocks apart, not Bitcoin's 210,000. The second halving was November 2024, at block 2,726,400. The current subsidy is 1.5625 ZEC per block. Under NU6 that subsidy splits 80% to miners, 8% to Zcash Community Grants, and 12% to a lockbox (0.1875 ZEC per block). The next halving is block 4,406,400, when the subsidy step goes from 1.5625 ZEC to 0.78125 ZEC.

At 10:29 UTC on October 11, 2026, ZecStats showed height 3,513,954, with 892,446 blocks left. At the 75-second target that is about November 24, 2028. The height is the rule. The calendar date moves as blocks arrive. The same page put issued supply near 16.98 million ZEC, about 80.9% of the cap, with about 1,800 ZEC issued per day.

NU7, a faster block target. NU7 is a proposal to move the target from 75 seconds toward 25 seconds. The Zcash Foundation's October 6, 2026 engineering note says the faster blocks are meant to keep the amount of ZEC issued each day the same, so confirmations come sooner without a jump in daily issuance. Testnet activated on October 4, 2026, at block 4,465,026. ZIP 259 lists the mainnet activation height as not set, and says it is to be set on October 20, 2026. Public posts name November 5, 2026 as a tentative date that still depends on that decision. This page does not treat November 5 as a scheduled launch.

Listing attention. Past exchange listing decisions have moved ZEC. Coinbase listed ZEC-USD as online on October 11, 2026. This page does not catalog other venues. Funding and open interest on perpetual markets are not alert types until that feed is connected.

How much it usually moves

From October 12, 2025 through October 11, 2026, CoinGecko's daily USD series for zcash produced 364 close-to-close changes. The method is in README.md.

The median absolute move was 3.7%. The 90th percentile day was 11.7%. The price moved at least 5% on 152 days, at least 3% on 207 days, and at least 10% on 54 days. The largest close-to-close change in the window was 28.9%.

About 2 days in 5 cleared 5%. A fixed "5% up or down" rule fires on an ordinary day for ZEC. The October 20 decision can land in a week that would have cleared 5% with no upgrade on the calendar. An unusual-move alert uses Zcash's own recent range.

A 5% move inside one hour is a different event from a 5% close-to-close day. This count does not measure the hourly case.

Example alerts

These are examples of wording. They are not recommendations, and they are not live prices. Terminal can run an unusual move, a percent move, a price level, or a volume spike. The note on an alert describes the move. It does not tell you what to do.

  1. Tell me when Zcash (ZEC) moves more than usual within an hour.
  2. Tell me when ZEC moves more than usual within 24 hours.
  3. Tell me when ZEC's volume is at least 3 times its 20-day average.

Leave the 24-hour rule on through the October 20 decision. The decision does not send the alert. The move does. An unusual-move alert waits 4 hours before it can fire again, unless you change that. A volume alert waits 1 hour by default.
